Who is Ben Tulip?

Meet Ben Tulip, an upcoming 23-year-old alternative music artist from Rwanda, Kigali, whose music is characterized by unique melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Though he started his artistic journey with drawing, he soon discovered his passion for music at the age of 15, when he began writing his first rap song. When he showed his classmates, the response was so encouraging that he kept pursuing music, and even today, he considers it the best therapy one can get.

Ben Tulip’s music can be classified as alternative, but he began with mostly rap and learned to use his voice to create unique melodies that are close to the soul. His music was initially inspired by French rappers like Booba, Kaaris, and Damso, but he found his biggest inspiration in Tyler the Creator, whose sound opened doors to other Music genres. A$ap Rocky’s music videos and fashion style are also significant inspirations to Ben Tulip. These artists influenced him to start his own artistic journey and even though Ben Tulip really looks up to them, his goal is to surpass them, not necessarily in terms of fame but in terms of talent and creativity.

Apart from making music, Ben Tulip has several other interests. He makes his own cover art, directs and edits his music videos, and is a part-time model. His passion for fashion is evident in his music videos and covers, where he pays close attention to his outfits to showcase his artistic identity. If you take a look at his discography you will notice the evolution in his style, from a vintage aesthetic look to a punk version of himself, which he calls the “Tulip Noir”, from his many other alter egos.

When asked where he sees himself in five years, Ben Tulip replied that he doesn’t like having expectations as it ruins the moment, but he hopes to tour, do sold-out shows, have his first real role in a movie, and finally find peace with his mind.
